Immersion II [The Cube]

  • …a music event curated by Austin musician/engineer Matt Burnett.

    | Sunday, November 27 | 8PM | Salvage Vanguard Theatre | $5 |

“Immersion Two [The Cube]” features performances by:

    • Thomas Fang; creating four channels of audio and an accompanying live video projection, using a palette of glitches, noise, and feedback.
    • Adam Clark; providing sheets of sound that collide, fuse, then vanish. Events move across space to create a complex sonic system. An exploration of the physics within and outside of the ears.
    • Jonathan Cash; punctuating the event throughout the evening with his own style of harsh noise.
    • Christopher Petkus; performing an iteration of his new stage piece, “Mantra.” Where previous performance have featured silence and space, this performance focuses more on repetition and volume.
    • Matt Burnett; debuting a software-based quadraphonic piece “theCube = Cube.new();” that defines the basic dynamics of the quadraphonic immersive space.

    Visuals provided by:

    • Katie Rose Pipkin; using a dual-projector layout with live generative video on opposing surfaces. Reflections of light patterns from one will trigger/inform the other. Signal disruption from the movement of performers and audience will change the way the piece behaves.
    • Laurel Barickman; video tamer, pixel pusher, and late night hunter augments the event with her own unique visual style.

“Immersion Two [The Cube]” features five of Austin’s adventurous sound artists performing in the gallery at Salvage Vanguard Theater. These performances utilize a prototype quadraphonic sound projection system implemented by Matt Burnett, featuring video art by two of Austin’s forward-looking visual artists.

“This Immersion builds on the territory we started to describe in the previous event, back in August”, says Burnett. “For this event I wanted to focus more on the definition of the quadraphonic sound space, the ‘immersive space’ that the quad system makes possible. Sonically, this space takes the form of a cube, hence the title of this Immersion. For [The Cube] I was fortunate enough to enlist the help of several sound artists whose work is particularly suited for a multi-channel, spatial sonic environment like this. Having two visual artists providing real-time video projection during the event will create an even more immersive experience for the audience.”
